King David

David.   Chosen from the field.  What a story.  We are told in 1 Samuel 13:14 and in Acts 13:22 that David is a man after God’s heart.  David is profoundly loved by God.  He is led by God. But David faced many trials and battles.  He ran.  He hid in caves.  He cried out to God in our treasured Psalms like Psalm 13.   Yes, he was beloved and favored by God. Yet he faced disappointments.  Chiefly when God told him he was not the one to build the temple he had dreamed of creating for so long.  He is such a great example of praising God in Psalm 108.

My heart is confident in you, O God; No wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart! Wake up, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. For your unfailing love is higher than the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine all over the earth.

Psalm 108

David loved God   And he wanted to honor God.   Yet he famously sinned. Remember that?!?   His friend Nathan had to go to David to explain it and lay out what his sin was.
We too are blinded to our own sins.  We feel like we have done well.  We are respected in our communities and in our jobs.   We feel God’s love. We feel like we are good people.   Yet we sin. And we are blind to it.
What friend will be brave enough to talk to us about our sin?  What will our reaction be?  How can we help our friends see their sins?  How can our friends help us see our sins?
We are all in this.  Don’t hide in a cave.  Face your sin.   Acknowledge it.  Ask for forgiveness.  God sent his only son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins and we are forgiven.   The Bible tells us that when we confess, our sins are as far as the east is from the west and will never again be remembered. What a gift!

Godspeed

O Lord, How long will you forget me? Forever?

How long will you look the other way?

How long must I struggle with anguish in my in my soul, with sorrow in my heart everyday?

How long will my enemy have the upper hand?

Turn and answer me, O Lord my God!

Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die.

Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying “We have defeated him!”

Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall.

But I trust in your unfailing love.

I will rejoice because you have rescued me.

I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.

Psalm 13
